FAQs

Why do I get a message about Roblock not being able to access the Internet when I try to register the product with my product key?

Roblock uses APN (Access Point Name) based carrier Internet service for communication with the server, and it is essential to configure the correct APN settings.  For many users, the correct APN settings will have already been configured when their phones were purchased.  Others can configure their APN settings for their BlackBerry phones by selecting Settings, then selecting Options, then selecting Advanced Options, and then selecting TCP/IP.  This menu will permit the user to configure the correct APN settings.  APN settings are unique to the wireless carrier.  A list of correct APN settings for a number of major carriers from across the world is available at http://xroblock.com/APN.  You can configure your APN settings in the TCP/IP menu using this list. If your service provider is not on the list, please contact your network provider’s customer support for the correct APN settings.

How is Roblock Essential Plus different from prior versions?

Roblock Essential Plus is an integration of Roblock’s theft recovery system with RoblockUP, a remote data backup service.  Roblock Essential Plus also provides a user-enhanced experience that includes a web interface designed to streamline remote control of the user’s phone as well as manage backed up data.

Why do I need remote backup?

Most users do not backup their devices regularly by connecting their phones to a PC and utilizing a USB backup to a local hard drive. Remote backup allows users to schedule regular backups that take place silently at a user-specified time, day or night. Moreover, with backup data going to Roblock’s secure servers, which are themselves subject to additional levels of backup, users receive even more protection against data loss. During a remote backup, your phone will still retain its full functionality (e.g., to send or receive phone calls).  For scheduled backups, please keep in mind that your phone must be kept on at the scheduled times for Roblock to conduct the backup.

How does Roblock work after a SIM card change?

Roblock can communicate via SMS and email protocols on your phone.  After a SIM card change, Roblock automatically locks your phone to minimize your potential data loss.  While SMS commands may no longer work, email commands to your phone will still work provided that there is a data connection available.

Does Roblock work with phones that do not have SIM cards, such as CDMA phones?

Yes. Roblock functions just as well with CDMA phones as with GSM phones that utilize SIM cards. The major difference is that CDMA phone users do not need Roblock’s added SIM change notification protection.

My device does not have a GPS. Will I be able to locate my device on a map?

Yes. Roblock obtains your phone’s approximate location using data retrieved from the cell phone towers closest to your phone.

How accurate is Roblock’s ability to locate my device?

Roblock can provide the location of your device within a few meters if you have a GPS enabled phone and there are no problems with the GPS hardware on your phone.  For non-GPS enabled devices, Roblock will generally pinpoint the location of your phone within a few hundred meters.

Is it safe to do online backup of my personal data?

Roblock uses a proprietary encryption algorithm to secure the data collected from your phone before transmitting it over a certified SSL channel with up to 256 bit encryption. All data is encrypted and stored on a secure server, only to be decrypted when you wish to see it through your web interface.

Does Roblock Essential Plus back up all of the data on my phone?

No. RoblockUP only backs up the last 50 emails of each email account configured on your phone, your contacts, your calendar entries, your tasks, and your memos.

Why won’t Roblock Essential Plus back up my music files, my pictures files, and other files?

RoblockUP backs up your data over the wireless network.  Depending on the size of the files on your phone, such a backup would simply take too long and utilize too much data on the wireless networks to be a viable alternative at this time.  Roblock is currently developing the capacity through RoblockUP to utilize available WiFi signals on WiFi-enabled phones to backup larger files.

Regardless, the most important data to back up from your phone is information that either permanently resides only on your phone (e.g., your contacts, calendar entries, tasks, and memos) or consists of emails that may not be preserved elsewhere (e.g., if an email account uses the POP3 protocol and downloads messages from the mail server).  Music files are generally created on PCs and then transferred to phones. Please keep in mind, however, that when a WIPE command is executed, all data will be deleted, including pictures, videos, and music files.
